Orthopedic Considerations Following Abdominopelvic Surgeries (SED)

This course is relevant to physical therapy in that surgical disruption of the abdominal wall directly influences abdominal muscle activation, posture, movement patterns, and neural inputs. Such impairments would lead to dysfunction and pain and should be considered during a physical therapy assessment. 1CCU 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Present incidence and prevalence of abdominopelvic surgeries;
2. Detail surgical procedures-Review pertinent anatomy;
3. Discuss possible complications;
4. Introduce PT assessments of impairment;
5. Discuss how the nervous system is involved;
6. Discuss treatment ideas.

Speaker(s)
Dana Hill, PT, DPT, OCS graduated from the University of Arizona in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology and minors in Chemistry and Psychology. She completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2016 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She joined Harris Health System in 2016 for their Orthopedic Residency Program and the year after graduation became a board certified orthopedic clinical specialist. After residency, Dana worked in home health and at an hospital-based outpatient clinic where she developed a pelvic floor rehab program for women and men. Two years later, she re-joined Harris Health System as an orthopedic and pelvic floor physical therapist based at Fournace Place.
