The hip joint is a crucial proximal segment in charge of transmitting ground reaction forces to the sacrum and spine. Ergo learning treatment and diagnostic techniques are paramount to optimize recovery from injury at the hip9CCUs (6 live with an additional 3 Virtual CCUs of pre-course study material to maximize face-to-face lab time.)

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Integrate key anatomical, biomechanical, and pathomechanical information into the examination scheme and subsequent treatment planning;
2. Assemble and consider all relevant information from the subjective and bjective examination for making a sound impairment and pathology-based diagnosis involving the hip;
3. Recognize appropriate common evaluative and treatment precautions and contraindications following common post-operative cases of the hip;
4. Perform detailed movement analysis and relevant special tests at the hip for the purpose of pathology and impairment-based diagnosis while cognizant of the reliability, validity, and accuracy of the testing procedures;
5. Perform manual techniques, including joint mobilization, joint manipulation, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation for the purpose of relieving pain and increasing mobility;
6. Recognize exercise techniques to the hip for the purpose of relieving pain, increasing mobility, and increasing strength.

Speaker(s)
Dr. Edward Mulligan, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, ATC has been involved in orthopedic-sports physical therapy, athletic training, and clinical education for the past 42 years. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Nebraska and he received his physical therapy training at UTMB- Galveston. He completed the post-professional Master’s Degree program at Texas Woman’s University- Dallas in 1995 and his transitional DPT at Regis University in 2008. He was recognized as a Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy by the APTA in 1988 and was the Chair for the Sports Physical Therapy Council of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS) from 2010-11. He is the current author of ABPTS’s description of specialty practice for sports physical therapy. He was certified as a ClinicalSpecialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2009 and is the Director of the Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Residency Programs at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He served on the Board of Directors for the American Physical Therapy Association’s Residency and Fellowship Education from 2014-2018. He was a Professorwith joint appointments in the Physical Therapy and Orthopedic Surgery Departments at UT Southwestern Medical Center for over 20 years. He is now the Director of the musculoskeletal curriculum at the DPT hybrid program for Tufts University in Phoenix. He is a member of the Orthopedic Academy’s research committee and the lead consultant for the development of accredited foot/ankle fellowship training programs. He’s been awarded the lifetime education achievement award by the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy and inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2020. He is a published author of over 30 studies from orthopedic and sports related peer-reviewjournals such as Manual Therapy, Physical Therapy in Sport, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy.
