This presentation will utilize various case studies to demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of physical therapists involved in direct access care. The recent changes to the Texas Physical Therapy Practice Act regarding direct access care will also be discussed. 1CCU and 1 hour of Differential Diagnosis

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of physical therapists in primary care;
2. Given a case scenario, determine the need for additional testing, referral and/or treatment;
3. Describe the recent changes and requirements to practice direct access physical therapy care in the State of Texas.

Speaker(s)
Scott W. Shaffer, PT, PhD is a Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Electrophysiology. Dr. Shaffer is a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University. He retired from the Army in 2018 and has served in a variety of roles, to include Chief of Army Physical Therapy, Dean of the Graduate School, and Director of the Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy. He has provided direct access care in multiple settings to include military deployments to Iraq and Bosnia. Dr. Shaffer earned his PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences with a focus in Adult Neurologic Disorders at the University of Kentucky. He has extensive clinical, research and teaching experience in neuromusuloskeleltal assessment, treatment and injury prediction.
