Clinical neuroanatomy principles are directly applicable to physical therapist patient care. A review of neuroanatomy structures relative to common neurologic diagnoses treated by physical therapists will strengthen clinician skills in neurologic differential diagnoses and neurologic examination and treatment. 4CCUs
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the neuroanatomical structures and cerebral blood supply related to stroke. 2. Compare the functional and anatomical relationships of the ascending sensory and descending motor pathways related to spinal cord injury. 3. Describe the functional and anatomical composition of the basal ganglia related to Parkinson’s Disease.
Speaker(s) Elizabeth Ardolino, PT, MPT, PhD is the Assistant Program Director and an Associate Professor in the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences’ DPT program on the Austin campus. Dr. Ardolino has taught the Clinical Neurosciences course to both PT and OT students for over 7 years. Her clinical work has focused on promoting neuroplasticity in adults and children with neuromotor disorders. Her main research focus is the development and psychometric testing of new outcome measures to assess function in adults and children with neuromotor disorders.
Kathleen Manella, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of St. Augustine’s Austin Campus DPT program. Dr. Manella earned a BSPT from University of Illinois (1975), a MSPT from University of Southern California (1987), and a PhD in PT/Neuroscience from University of Miami (2011). Dr. Manella’s has extensive clinical experience in orthopedic and neurorehabilitation of pediatric and adult individuals. Dr. Manella is an instructor in the Clinical Neuroscience course for PT and OT students. Dr. Manella’s research is focused on measurement of abnormal lower limb reflex activity and operant conditioning interventions for people with spinal cord injury and stroke. She has developed a smart phone video based clinical tool for ankle clonus measurement.

Additional Information This course includes some activities in our cadaver lab. Women who are pregnant or nursing are not permitted to enter the cadaver lab, due to chemicals in use in that area.
