Dizziness is a common patient complaint faced by Physical Therapists. Dizziness symptoms can significantly alter a patient’s quality of life, many times leading to decreased participation, significant mobility deficits, and an increased risk of falls. The vestibular system is implicated in a large percentage of dizziness cases. Knowledge of the vestibular system, vestibular system dysfunction, and vestibular rehabilitation is vital to addressing these debilitating issues. This introductory course will lay a foundation for understanding basic vestibular dysfunction as it relates to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular hypofunction, and central vestibular disorders, including basic assessment and rehabilitation strategies. 3CCUs and 1 hour of Differential Diagnosis

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Provide an overview of vestibular anatomy and physiology.
2. Identify how the vestibular system contributes to balance.
3. Establish a foundation for identifying types of dizziness.
4. Review the assessment and treatment of posterior canal BPPV.
5. Educate how to assess and treat basic vestibular hypofunction.
6. Recognize signs and symptoms of Central Vestibular Disorders.
