Neuropathic Ulcers (CAD)

Incidence of diabetes and associated neuropathic ulcers is increasing, with associated costs continuing to be a burden to medical care. PT’s and PTA’s in all settings will be providing care for patients with diabetes, and may be the first healthcare providers to recognize onset of neuropathy, foot changes indicating risk for neuropathic ulcers, and neuropathic ulcers that have already occurred. This a beginner-level presentation designs to provide background information and clinically-relevant tools for assessment and intervention for prevention and treatment of this patient population. 1CCU

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Define neuropathy;
2. List common characteristics of neuropathic foot changes;
3. Describe the typical appearance of a neuropathic ulcer;
4. List signs of infection•Discuss assessment and intervention strategies for neuropathic ulcers;
5. Discuss functional implications of neuropathic ulcers;
6. Discuss weight-bearing/mobility considerations.

Speaker(s)
Diane Merwarth, PT, CWS is a Sr. Physical Therapist and Certified Wound Specialist at Ascension Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. She received her BS in Physical Therapy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1982 and her wound specialist certification through the American Academy of Wound Management in 2001. In addition to attending numerous continuing education courses she received a Certificate of Completion for the International Interdisciplinary Wound Care Course in Toronto, Canada in 2007. She also completed a 1-year certification in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair through Cardiff University in Wales in 2015. She has been a physical therapist at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas and at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as Director of Rehab Services at Brackenridge Hospital from 1992 – 1994. She was the coordinator of wound care from 1996-2012 and of the Wound Management Clinic at Brackenridge from 1998-2012. She transitioned to the inpatient wound management team in 2012, and has been a member of the burn team since 2017. She holds memberships in AAWC, AAWM, Wound Healing Society, ABA, TPTA, and APTA (including Acute Care Section and Section on Electrophysiology and Wound Management). Recipient of the TPTA’s Ruby Decker Award in 2009 and the Dr. Barbara Sanders Service Award from Texas State University in 2010, she continues to provide educational presentations to PT programs in Austin, as well as continuing education in various settings.

Schedule
Meetings follow a regular format of social time from 5:30-6:00 pm, business and special topic presentation from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm.
