Neuroplasticity and Mindful Movement: Integrating Pilates with Rehabilitation for Successful Outcomes (NTD)-WEBINAR
Tuesday, June 16, 2020, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM CDT
Category: District Meetings

This is an evidence-based introductory course for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students and is appropriate for acute care, home health, OP, and rehab settings. The course is designed to introduce the therapist to the assessments, interventions, and application techniques utilized across the continuum of rehabilitation and Pilates. The neurological component of the course will review the brain as it is structured for motor learning, with a review of mirror neurons and the role they play in neuroplasticity as it applies to movement acquisition. We will summarize the evolution of Pilates and how it has become “mainstream” today and discuss the Principles of Pilates as the foundation for successful movement. Participants will develop an appreciation for Pilates principles and exercises, followed by a lecture demonstration, the role they play in neuroplasticity, and applying them to movement integration. 2CCUs

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Apply the concept of neuroplasticity for fostering new movement patterns;
2. Differentiate the importance of motor control and the role of mirror neurons for movement acquisition;
3. Interpret the evolution of Pilates and how Pilates is now utilized across the rehabilitation spectrum for different patient populations;
4. Apply the concepts of the Pilates Principles and implement them appropriately in their respective setting;
5. Experience and interpret the Pilates Principles in their own bodies during a lab “movement session”;
6. Apply movement integration and evidence-based research to their current therapeutic interventions.
