el, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical Th
erapy at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Houston, Texas. Dr. Patel teache
s content related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and the Social Dete
rminants of Health (SDOH) within the DPT curriculum at TWU. Dr. Patel has t
aught continuing education courses at various local, state, and national co
nferences as well as within educational programs and community organization
s on DEI and SDOH in physical therapy (PT) practice. She has also appeared
on several podcasts talking about DEI, SDOH and systemic racism in PT. Dr.
Patel was the recipient of a research grant from the Academy of Leadership
and Innovation or ALI (formerly HPA The Catalyst Section) to examine the va
lidity, reliability, and utility of a PT SDOH survey tool. She was also the
recipient of the APTA Minority Faculty Award for her dissertations study e
xamining health disparities in diabetes prevention among understudied Asian
Indian American population. Dr. Patel is a founding member of the APTA's C
ouncil on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Wellness; served as an elected
member of the national APTA Nominating Committee and chair of the ANPT Advo
cacy and Consumer Affairs Committee. She currently serves as: the Federal A
dvocacy Liaison (FAL) for ANPT, a delegate from Texas to the APTA House of
Delegates, the chair of the Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA) Bylaw
s Committee, a member of the TPTA DEI Task Force, a member of the APTA ALI
Research Committee, aa key contact for the ALI Social Justice in Health Cat
alyst Group, and a board member of the Physical Therapy Learning Institute
(PTLI) which hosts the annual Lynda D Woodruff Lecture on DEI in PT.
