Opportunities to use the skill set of a physical therapist in non- traditional settings abound! As direct access laws in Texas change, and we gain access to more potential patients, this is the time for therapists to build upon the success of traditional physical therapy models, taking our s kills out into the community. Identifying new ways to engage and serve the community around us is critical to furthering our profession, engaging the public in improving healthy movement, improving access to patients, and edu cating the masses on the benefits of skilled physical therapy. In an enviro nment where clinics seek new ways to generate referrals, clinicians seek mo re opportunities to engage their patients, and patients seek meaningful way s to interact with healthcare professionals, we must find new ways to reach possible patients and to remind the community of the tremendous value we o ffer. This course is intended to help clinicians reconnect with their passi on, consider their “why” behind working in physical therapy, and identify w ays in which each clinician can use their passion to better engage and educ ate the public on healthy living, better movement, and “why” we chose to be come physical therapists. 2CCUs
At the conclusion of the course, participants
will be able to:
1. Define “non-traditional” physical th
erapist roles
2. Identify at least 3 ways to apply their own “movement
expertise” as a physical therapist to activities or topics related to thei
r own personal passions
3. Consider a target population that will bene
fit from engaging with a physical therapist
4. Discuss health benefits
of these possible encounters
5. Identify 3 possible resources in the
community to enable this work to begin and at least 1 potential “road-block
” to overcome
6. Examine how these encounters can create new possible
revenue streams for clinics, areas of possible research, and opportunities
to educate the public on the value of skilled therapy
