This course will define chronic pain, explain how understanding patients with chronic pain can lead to better patient-therapist teamwork and outcomes, explain how chronic pain develops, and review evidence-based strategies helpful for the management of chronic pain. 1CCU 

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Define chronic pain;
2. Discuss who are the best and most critical patient candidates that would benefit from pain neuroscience education;
3. Explain how chronic pain develops including central sensitization;
4. Discuss pain metaphors that will help patients understand chronic pain concepts;
5. 
Patient strategies to help manage chronic pain.

Speaker(s)
Kristen Lawson, PTA, BS received a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2010, with a minor in secondary education. Before her career began as a PTA, she taught high school science in biology, physics and chemistry for 5 years. She then changed careers to become a physical therapist assistant and graduated from the PTA program at El Paso Community College in May 2020. She has been working as a physical therapist assistant for a year and a half. She has served as secretary for GEPD for one term in 2022 and now serves as the PTA assembly representative to the TPTA. She has a passion for lifelong learning and continuing education.

Course registrants will be notified via email within 24 hours if course must be cancelled. Further, course cancellation will be posted to the GEPD Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/GEPDgroup).

Additional Information and Registration
CCUs are only issued to PTs and PTAs. In order to receive credit, you must pre-register, be present for the full course and sign in and out at the time of the meeting. After the course complete the course evaluation that will be emailed to you. You must follow all instructions, including completing registration before the cut-off. Credits will be issued after verifying attendance and completion of evaluation by the deadline no later than May 1, 2023. Please allow until then for processing. Instructions for retrieving will be emailed to you.
